The Armchair Audio Engineer

The sense of hearing is a funny thing. Humans can learn to tune certain sounds out, determine the source of a sound based on the slight difference in arrival time between the two ears, and some blind people possess a dolphin-like ability to locate obstacles in their path by listening for sounds echoing around them. While the average person might not see a “jump” while watching a video with a single frame dropped, many people would be able to discern a sliver of time that has been removed from a song. While they might not be able to explain what’s wrong with the sound they’re hearing, they’d be able to sense that something wasn’t quite right with it. In a way, audio is a thankless field. When everything’s right and the finished product sounds clear and believable, nobody says anything about it. But when sound turns out to be bad, everybody complains about it. It’s both an art and a science, and yet the majority of people never give it the thought it deserves.

I was raised by a radio. And a television, and a computer. I’ve dabbled in electronics, experimenting with the various ways audio can be destroyed by mismatching impedances. I’ve studied music theory, along with the many scales and modes that don’t fit with modern mainstream music. I’ve written computer programs that parse the raw data out of WAVE files and perform manipulations. I’ve built internet radio stations with text-to-speech DJs and song requests. I’ve had boom operators storm away from film sets in anger because “my sound was nerdy.” And I listen to a huge and varied assortment of music from most genres and periods. But if there’s one thing that exposed me to the subtle intricacies of sound, it was my curiosity and natural tendency to take things apart. I’m not talking about things like tape decks and other circuits — although I’ve disassembled my share over the years. I’m talking about analyzing every piece of sound I can get my hands on.

Sometime during high school, when I acquired both the computer hardware and software necessary to record and really observe sound, things really got started. I would capture every sound I could find, from dialogue on TV to the sound of a soda can opening. I’d spend hours making “oooh” and “aaah” sounds into a microphone and staring at a spectral analyzer to see what frequencies my voice was made of. I ripped the audio tracks from DVDs to try to figure out how the audio phasing in the action scenes worked. I played almost every song I had at the time and watched the waveform scroll by as it would on an oscilloscope. I discovered how high and low frequencies mix, and how subtle changes in a wave’s shape can completely change what kind of sound it produces. I even went as far as to play with filters and effects to try to reproduce the aural tricks I’ve heard in songs.

Every once in a while — after playing a song with the center channel removed or isolated, or muting certain frequency bands, or just through dumb luck — I’ll discover something in a song that I’ve never noticed before. Either the microphones picked up something they weren’t intended to, or the mixers and engineers accidentally allowed something to slip through, or the artists themselves intentionally added something hidden. Most of the time, these kinds of discoveries are inconsequential and worth nothing more than the intellectual pursuit of finding them. But sometimes, sometimes they add up to a story or a mystery, as if the song is trying to tell you something about its life. Most songs and albums don’t have much information that’s ever shared with the public. What happens in the studio often stays there, and nobody ever stops to wonder what events transpired to bring the album to fruition.

The first mystery I can ever recall finding was part of Chef Aid: The South Park Album. This album was released in 1998 during the second season of the animated TV series South Park, after episode 214 (entitled Chef Aid) aired. Both the album and the South Park episode feature musical performances from popular artists including Ozzy Osbourne, Elton John, Rick James, and Meat Loaf. And of course, Isaac Hayes provided the voice for Chef, who delivered an intro/outro on every track and even sang (lead and background) in several of them.

Now, some might wonder why I chose to pick apart what is essentially a novelty album, instead of a “real” album put out by respected artists. Say what you want, but I rather enjoy the musical work of Trey Parker. Most of the original music you hear in a South Park episode or a Parker/Stone movie probably came (at least in part) from Trey Parker. Anybody who had the song “America, F**k Yeah” stuck in their heads for days after seeing Team America: World Police has Trey Parker to thank for it. He has this bizarre ability to come up with songs that are not only funny, but surprisingly catchy as well. He really should’ve won the Oscar for “Blame Canada” instead of Phil Collins. But I digress.

The Chef Aid album is a respectable 21 tracks, and its 78 minute runtime pushes Red Book audio to the edge of its comfort zone. Interestingly enough, the first 15 tracks are pretty straightforward and uninteresting. It’s not until track 16 (Ned Gerblansky’s cover of “Feel Like Makin’ Love”) that things start jumping out. Admittedly, the sound of Trey Parker singing a Bad Company song while imitating a man who lost his voice to cancer is difficult to ignore (and in fact, one of the band members can be heard laughing at the song’s entire premise at around 3:05), I’d like to call your attention to Hayes’ backing vocals. It’s difficult to hear, especially because Hayes sings the exact same words as the lead, but his voice suffers from some very distinct compression artifacting. The same can be heard on track 19, “It’s A Rockin’ World.”

For a more audible example of this artifacting, look at tracks 17 and 20 — “The Rainbow” and “Mephisto And Kevin” — respectively. In both those songs, Hayes’ voice shows some very noticeable artifacts. A fair amount of the frequency spectrum (everything above the 8 kHz neighborhood, specifically) is either entirely missing or at least attenuated to the point where it’s no longer audible. The “sss” sounds are hurt most by these artifacts. But there are also other strange symptoms here, like a metallic “underwater” sound that is found most often on poorly compressed, low-bitrate MP3 files. None of the instrument tracks or lead vocals show this type of loss. A great deal of Hayes’ voice was unintentionally altered in tracks 16-20, and all because of what I can only assume is a lossy compression format being used somewhere along the line during the tracks’ production.

There was a documentary several years ago called “Goin’ Down to South Park.” I’m pretty sure they included it on the series’ Season Two DVD set, but don’t quote me on that. Anyway, that documentary had an interesting fact that may shed some light on all this: While the South Park production buildings are in (or around) the Los Angeles area, Isaac Hayes lived in New York and would record all his dialogue for the show “over the phone” while Parker and Stone directed him. I’m sure everybody reading this knows what a phone sounds like, but suffice it to say the 250-5000 Hz frequency response of standard voice lines sounds downright awful, and nobody worth their weight in body parts would use such a line to record dialogue for a television show. A more likely approach would be to use something like an ISDN line, which might send digital data at 128 kbps between the two callers. Suddenly, it becomes clear where compression artifacts could come from. If you have to squeeze somebody’s voice into a 128k stream of data (or worse, if you have to limit your transmit rate to 64k, because the other party is using the other 64k to talk back to you) — and do it in real-time — you’re going to lose some audio data.

When you’re doing a TV show, you can afford to push some of your dialogue through lossy audio formats. The sound goes through so many manipulations during its voyage from the source tape to your ears, including being heavily compressed (in terms of gain) and limited to -6 dB. It also loses some of its finer detail as it travels from your cable or satellite provider to your home. Most standard-definition digital broadcast systems allocate 3-5 Mbps of data for each channel, and the majority of that is used by the video. Not to mention the fact that some television speakers are tiny and of questionable quality. Add in the fact that the viewer is most likely distracted by the images they’re seeing, and sitting 8+ feet from the screen and speakers, and the small artifacts in your dialogue track become more and more insignificant.

I’ve actually messed around with television audio, doing things like listening to the audio track through high-quality headphones without looking at the video. It’s amazing how many small defects I can pick out that I totally missed on the TV. And it’s actually surprising how “hollow” most television audio sounds.

When you make the transition to the audio CD world, there’s no longer any broadcast equipment to hide behind. Every nuance in your final mix comes through in pristine stereo. Pretty much every CD player can reproduce sounds from 20 Hz all the way up to a theoretical maximum of 22,050 Hz with over 90 dB of dynamic range (and even more if your hardware supports quantization depths higher than 16-bit). If somebody down the hall in the studio so much as sneezed while you were recording something, the digital equipment would pick it up and accurately store it without much loss.

Needless to say, you can’t afford to have your lead vocal track squeezed through an ISDN line; it would give itself away almost instantaneously. That’s why you’d fly the talent out to the studio and have him record his vocals straight into the mix without any data compression. And that appears to be what they did with Isaac Hayes on this album.

Except for tracks 16-20.

There’s only one explanation I can think of that makes any logical sense. I believe that Hayes flew out to do the first 15 tracks and all the intro/outro recording, and everything in track 16 and after had to be recorded “over the phone” after he returned to New York. Either the songs were added at the last minute, or Hayes’ schedule didn’t permit him to make another trip out to record more. Again, this is nothing more than a conjecture on my part, and unless I ever get the opportunity to meet Trey Parker and ask him about it, this will be nothing more than a guess. But it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s what happened here. Any self-respecting recording engineer wouldn’t want to put out something that sounded bad unless there were outside forces that couldn’t be avoided. Or a producer demanding the album “sound louder” to contend in the Loudness War (see the album “Californication” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers to see how disastrous that can become).

There’s one track I’ve intentionally left out of the discussion until now, and it’s certainly the most interesting one on the album. I’m referring to track 18, entitled “Tonight Is Right For Love (With Meredith Baxter-Birney).” A duet between Chef and Meat Loaf, this is actually my favorite song on the entire album. This track also contains clear artifacting on Hayes’ vocals, but they’re not consistent across the entire song like they are on the other tracks. It’s as if half the song was recorded in the studio (without artifacting) and the other half was re-recorded over the phone at a later date.

To outline the point I’m trying to make, I’ve transcribed the lyrics of the song below. I’ve marked all the lines with colors to signify what each line sounds like. The color legend is as follows:

After looking at these lyrics for a few minutes, certain patterns begin to emerge. It seems the only lines to be re-recorded were the ones involving either Meat Loaf or Meredith Baxter-Birney. Meat Loaf most likely performed his lines alone, and they were later mixed with Hayes’ to convey the illusion that they were performing a duet. Hayes probably returned to New York before they knew Meat Loaf would do the song, which would explain the need to record those lines from Hayes after the fact.

What’s more interesting are the lines involving Meredith Baxter-Birney. Perhaps the song was originally about something else?

I call your attention to an episode in the first season of South Park. Specifically, episode 105, “An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig.” In that episode, Chef performs a song entitled “Love Gravy” in order to facilitate the condition described in the episode’s title:

Love Gravy is, note-for-note, the exact same song as Tonight Is Right For Love (With Meredith Baxter-Birney). In fact, below are the lyrics to the song:

Compare the two. The songs have the same tempo, they’re in the same key, they have the same chord progressions, and they have the same lyrics. Except, of course, for the blatant difference between the words “Love Gravy” and “With Meredith Baxter-Birney.” The only lines in “Tonight Is Right…” that show compression artifacting are the lines they changed from the original “Love Gravy” song.

I should point out that the Chef Aid album has a track entitled “Love Gravy,” performed by the late great Rick James and Ike Turner. However, that song bears absolutely no resemblance to the original “Love Gravy” song from “An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig.” The “Love Gravy” track on Chef Aid seems as if it was only inspired by the words “Love Gravy” and not anything musical at all.

Birney / CrazyWhich explains why they likely changed the words “Love Gravy” to “With Meredith Baxter-Birney.” It would be pretty odd to have two unrelated songs on the same album about that topic. And if James and Turner showed up to record their rendition of “Love Gravy” after Hayes had recorded “Tonight Is Right…” and went home, that would explain why he had to re-record “With Meredith Baxter-Birney” remotely.

I took the liberty of placing the words “Birney” from 0:31 and “crazy” from 2:39 together side-by-side in a single file. In the entire song, those two words are the most similar-sounding, yet “Birney” suffers from the compression artifacting while “crazy” does not. To the right, I’ve placed a time-frequency graph that shows just how different they are. “Birney” looks as if it went through a low-pass filter at 8 kHz, while “crazy” contains detail all the way up to 16 kHz and beyond. You can hear the differences between the two below:

An even more compelling piece of evidence came to light when I first listened to the song on a pair of relatively decent headphones. During the line in the piano interlude when Chef says “Messing up my business with Meredith Baxter-Birney,” you can faintly hear somebody’s voice buried deep in the left channel. It’s clearly not Hayes’ or Meat Loaf’s voice, and if I had to guess, I’d say it was most likely Bruce Howell (the guitarist) judging by the way the audio is phased. It’s difficult to hear without a great deal of processing, and even then it’s still quite faint, but he definitely sings the words “Tonight is right for love, Love Gravy.” He obviously wasn’t miked, or if he was, the signal from that mic never made it into the final mix. The words “Love Gravy” are also louder and more pronounced, as if he sang them more powerfully than the other words. The final syllable (“-vy”) is a bit buried in the downbeat of the following measure, but it’s there.

Tonight is right for love, Love GravyI had a conversation with somebody about this a few years ago, and he thought that the mystery vocal was just an instrumentalist saying “yeah, great” as an echo immediately after Meat Loaf said that very same line. However, once I pointed out the presence of the words “Tonight is right for love” directly before the line in question, he admitted that I was probably correct.

I cut out a sample containing the portion of the song in question:

I removed the inphase audio starting around the time Chef says “Messing up my business with Meredith Baxter-Birney” and amplified the remaining out-of-phase signal by 12 dB. What remains is faint, but if you listen carefully, you can hear the line in question coming out of the left speaker. You can also take a look at the image to the left, which shows the file as a time-frequency graph. I marked the beginning of each syllable to make it easier to see, but some of the shorter words (like “is”) can be tricky to spot. Note that the left channel is at the top half of the image, and the right at the bottom.

So what conclusion am I trying to convey? I want to point out that from what I can hear, it sounds like portions of the Chef Aid album were re-recorded after the fact through a lossy telecommunications system. The audible artifacts left by this system also point out discrepancies in “Tonight Is Right For Love (With Meredith Baxter-Birney)” that indicate the song was originally intended to be an album version of “Love Gravy” from South Park episode 105. I also want to make it known that I have entirely too much free time, and I should be using my talents for something worthwhile and important.

But when you get right down to it, the reason why I took the time to write this is because I don’t think anybody else has. I’ve searched the Internet for people who have listened to this album and heard the same things I have, and my searches have always turned up nothing. I’m sure there are a great many people out there who have never even heard of this album, let alone run it through a spectral analyzer. I’d like to think that in some small way I contributed to society today. And if not, at least I killed an afternoon while waiting for the NyQuil to kick in.
